[edit] Dickinson High School
Where is this school? Right now just photos of the school. Peter O. (Talk) 07:14, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)
- Agreed. I'm now in the progress of helping improve this article in the event you wish to reconsider your vote. —RaD Man (talk) 02:14, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Probably Dickinson, North Dakota—there's an A.L. Hagen Junior High there[1].
Delete unless improved. Cool Hand Luke 07:36, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC) - Confirmed: Yes, North Dakota.
Article needs help, badly. No vote.—RaD Man (talk) 07:36, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)- PAYDIRT. Their school mascot is "The Midget". It doesn't take a genius to realize this has inevitably been met with much controversy. This article/subject now qualifies as an EXTREME KEEP in my book. Google turns up plenty of evidence of this, now to find a copy of the image. —RaD Man (talk) 02:42, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- FWIW... according to http://www.praxagora.com/sierra/flum/9609.htm there was a 1996 story, attributed to USA Today,
- Dickinson, N.D.---Residents torn over the school board's move to change the name and logo of the high school's'Midget' mascot met today to debate the issue. School board President Earl Abrahamson said there were few complaints, but 'die-hard fans' of the 80-year-old mascot---a short, squat, mean-looking character---were outraged."
- Now, personally, I would want to see the story context to see whether USA Today really felt this was news or whether this was something like the "News of the Weird" column. Amusing, but I am not convinced it was a significant controversy and I am not convinced it makes the school encyclopedic. The other relevant Google hit is a forum in which someone says
- Now, anyone who hasnt heard of us may be going "OMGOMGWTF!!" right now but really its not that bad. Our nickname isn't derogatory - and our name isn't even an issue anymore in my city because fans know its history. We based our nickname off one of our earliest basketball teams. They were all short little squirts, but they kicked butt and their nickname was the midgets. The name stuck, and we kept it in their honor. Now, several years ago - as was bound to happen - the name DID become an issue. It took awhile for all the sensible people to find all the stupid people and slap them all upside the head until they got some sense themselves...but the cooler heads in Dickinson did eventually prevail and we remain the Midgets. And we are darn proud to be midgets."

- Send for cleanup. This article needs serious help. --Randy 12:20, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Merge into appropriate Dickinson and delete - Skysmith 12:44, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)IMO the most high schools should be included in the article about their community but as an article this is not bad - Skysmith 09:07, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)- Delete: Just a couple of pictures and a note that the school changed. No notability established. Geogre 16:05, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Keep. Good pictures. - SimonP 17:49, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)
- Delete. Unless for some completely inexplicable reason these school buildings actually won some national award, which I very much doubt. Otherwise, there is no data here at all, and any data that is worth getting would be better off under an education section in the corresponding town's article page. Average Earthman 21:08, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Keep. Intrigue 21:27, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Comment Hmmm... BEEFSTEW points A, C, D, and of course E for a total of 4/10. Not too bad for an article that doesn't look as if it's been written yet. Uh-oh, one of the images says ©2004 Hans Andersen and the other says ©1984 Hans Andersen. The author of the article appears to be Han Andersen, so he could release them under GFDL if he wants to—but he carefully put in the copyright notices, circle-C symbols and all, and did not add a statement saying he's releasing them under GFDL and add the GFDL tag. No vote yet. The article already makes the school distinguishable from other schools. What it really needs is some indication that the school is notable, and a decent paragraph or two. Dpbsmith (talk) 23:42, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC) P. S. Have left a note on the author's talk page explaining the GFDL issue. Dpbsmith (talk) 23:54, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Nice pictures can be deleted too. --Idont Havaname 23:50, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)- Keep, but put a separate section in for the mascot controversy. The article still appears to be a promo about the school, a type of thing that's usually deleteworthy. --Idont Havaname 04:20, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

- Delete. There are a probably 100,000 schools in the world as large and notable as this one. Just not remotely interesting to anyone who did not attend. -- GWO
- Keep, notable and interesting as well. --GRider\talk 17:33, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- Keep. Rewrite is interesting, well-done and very encyclopedic. Notable? Unquestionably. This is an excellent example of what a high school article should be! - Lucky 6.9 23:40, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- Keep. Come on, are you really that offended by the inclusion of another article? High schools may seem special to some people and not to others, but for the latter, simply ignore!

- Comment this school is very similar to my own high school in saverel respects.... including the core system and a person who graduated was on the tonight show. I swear i could write a article just as good as this one about my own school and if i put it up for VfD it would be voted to be kept. Why? becasuse its a school. my town is in south dakota is the size of dikinson, our School colors: Orange and Black and our school has a very similar history.I would be the first to say that if my school was put up for VfD that it was not notable (about the same as this one.) it would be a interesting experiment if i was willing to do it (wich i am not)delete!
