Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Brabble

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brabble was proposed for deletion. This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion. This page is no longer live. Further comments should be made on the article's talk page rather than here so that this page is preserved as an historic record. The result of the debate was to delete.

Spurious. Seems to have been created months ago by a known problem user (see User_talk:JeffyJeffyMan2004). Now I've embarked on the process of systematising articles on places in County Durham I've discovered this place doesn't exist. Not on the map, not in a comprehensive gazetteer I checked, and Google gives only Wikipedia mirrors or unconnected usage of the word. — Trilobite (Talk) 14:18, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

 • Delete. If it can be verified that it exists, keep it, but if it's not real, then it doesn't need to be here. [[User:Mo0|Mo0[talk]]] 21:16, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Delete if no-one can find confirmation of its existence. Jayjg 22:54, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Comment There's a newsgroup, uk.local.county-durham and I've just posted a query there. (Don't expect it to show right away in Google Groups, their lag time is many hours). (And don't expect a quick reply, it's a low-volume group—maybe 80 messages/month). Dpbsmith (talk) 01:31, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Comment. Thanks for the newsgroup post. That should settle the matter. I think it's inconceivable though that it exists. My knowledge of County Durham doesn't extend to every part of the county which is why I took it in good faith, but the article claims a population of 1000 and some of the places I've listed on list of places in County Durham, which I now believe to be complete, have only a handful of people. What surprises me is that this article was around for so long. If you have a look at the history you'll see that the original author was actually reverted for adding a stupid comment, which linked to an article I should really have put on BJAODN before I had it speedied. Brabble is also a fairly plausible name for a village in that part of the world. About three more users, including myself, editted the article since but it's only now I've questioned its veracity. I wonder how much more undetected rubbish is on Wikipedia! — Trilobite (Talk) 12:45, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Delete I have a reply from one Keith Cunningham. That's good enough for me; it confirms we're not overlooking something obvious, like a famous nickname for a neighborhood with no official identity, or anything like that. Here's the reply:
A search for Brabble on http://uk2.multimap.com draws a blank. There doesn't seem to be one in Britain. It could possibly be a nickname for somewhere, but I've never heard of it before. KC

 • Delete. Less than 90 displayed hits for brabble durham, and all I checked are Wikipedia mirrors/forks, or "Brabble" as someone's last name, or a company name. Note it also needs to be removed from the German Wikipedia's County Durham article[1]. I also see that the article's creator tried to add "It's most famous resident is A Horse"--obvious joke/prank/hoax. Niteowlneils 21:13, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • This discussion section must be over 40 times as long as the Brabble article which we are discussing. It has been established that it is a hoax. Get rid of it. Anthony Appleyard 22:49, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Delete. The only Brabble/Durham connection I found in Google (except for wiki sites) were for Raleigh-Durham, NC. DCEdwards1966 03:43, Nov 20, 2004 (UTC)
 • Comment Another posting in the uk.local.county-durham newsgroup:' from one Alan G. (email not given): "I've lived in County Durham all my life (60). There is no such place as Brabble." QED. Dpbsmith (talk) 16:26, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)
 • Comment. Using a Wikipedia mirror I have recovered the deleted article linked in the page history from the author's insertion: "It's most famous resident is A Horse."
Brabbler is a famous horse, he is famous for wearing a Sunderland A.F.C [shirt, presumably] whilst running through the Northern England city of Brabble where everybody hates Sunderland A.F.C. It has been rumoured that he will be entered into professional horse racing but for now he runs around in his owner's back garden. It has also been rumoured that the story of Brabble will be made into a high-budget movie with the horse from Seabiscuit playing Brabbler and Michael Caine playing Brabbler's owner.
In any case, I think the debate on this article has long since been settled. — Trilobite (Talk) 22:25, 20 Nov 2004 (UTC)
