From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Volvo Laplander L-3314 is the base model of a range of military vehicles produced by Volvo.
They had many body-variants such as half-cab, soft-top, or special equipment (some mounting anti-tank weapons). All cars are forward control except L-3304.
Civilian versions of the L-3314 series and the C202 are often called the Volvo Laplander.

[edit] L-3314
The prototype series L-2304 was developed in the late 1950s. With major and minor changes the L-3314 was put into production in 1961. It used some standard components from the Volvo Amazon. Engine: B18A, gearbox M40 (four gears + R). The base version was L-3314SU, soft top. Other versions was L-3314 HT with hardtop and winch, L-3304 anti-tank gun car and L-3315 communications with shielded 24V system.
[edit] C202
The C202 was a civilian upgraded version of the L-3314 manufactured under license in Hungary. The major difference from L-3314HT is a B20 engine instead of the B18 and no differential brake in the rear axle.
[edit] Military use
The car was designed for the Swedish Army, and is named Pltgb 903. There is also a version called Raptgb 9033, which is a radio equipped command vehicle. A low profile open bodywork version called Pvpjtgb 9031, fitted with the Pvpj 1110 9cm antitank gun, was also available.
The Norwegian Army got a version called L-3314N with a fold-down windscreen and 24 volt electrical system to comply with NATO regulations. The Royal Netherlands Army bought a special version able to ford extra deep water (compared to the standard 0.5 metre fording limit).
[edit] Civilian use
Both versions are employed by civilians for rescue services and private use. Many L-3314s have been sold as military surplus and are used by off-road enthusiasts.
[edit] Technology
The Laplander used Constant-velocity joints in its front axle, of the type invented by Alfred H. Rzeppa.
[edit] Pet names
In Sweden the L-3314 is often called "Valp" (meaning "puppy" from its look and also its habit of lifting a back wheel when turning at high speed), in Norway it is also called "Felt" (meaning "field" from its Norwegian military designation: Vogn, felt, 1/2 tonn, 4x4, Volvo, modell L3314N)
