Voluntary social year

The voluntary social year in Germany (FSJ) is a voluntary replacement for military service that lasts between six to eighteen months. In order for the FSJ to be recognized as a replacement for military service the service duration has to be at least twelve months.

Possible locations are numerous and are all social, charitable or of public utility.

  • Services for handicapped persons
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Foster homes
  • Ambulatory services
  • Youth welfare services
  • Church communities
  • Emergency medical services
