[edit] Personality

Volrath is a cruel, ruthless leader whose arrogance is offset only by his great intelligence. When punishing prisoners, Volrath prefers to use methods that damage his captives psychologically. He deformed the proud minotaur Tahngarth with a magical ray, and placed the pacifist golem Karn in a room full of moggs, with a shifting floor which ensured that the golem's very existence lead to the deaths of others, as moggs would be crushed beneath his weight.

[edit] Abilities

Volrath is a master shapeshifter, with incredible control over his body's cellular structure (in one of the books, he is able to make stone crumble by insinuating his flesh into it). He is also a skilled geneticist and necromancer, whose experiments with both living and dead subjects have created countless monstrosities and a number of new species on Rath.

When Volrath was personified on a 2nd series Vanguard card he was given the ability "Whenever any of your creatures is put into your graveyard from play, you may put that creature on top of your library."

[edit] Vuel

Volrath was born as the human Vuel, Sidar Kondo’s son. Gerrard and he were blood brothers within the same clan before Vuel fell from the grace of his father and turned on Gerrard, holding him responsible. His ultimate greed and jealously at his former friend allowed him to come under the control of Yawgmoth. Thus he was transformed to Lord Volrath, second Evincar of Rath, servant of the Lord of the Wastes, Yawgmoth.

[edit] The Legacy

Volrath gained possession of a great deal of the Legacy, which was designed to eliminate his liege. Sisay’s kidnapping was a calculated plan of Volrath’s to lure Gerrard back into battle, so that he could lay his hands on the rest of the Legacy and on the heir himself.

[edit] Crovax

Volrath served under Yawgmoth until the usurper Crovax. Crovax attempted to take the throne of Rath under the influence of Kirril, while Volrath was absent. Also sent by Yawgmoth was Belbe, the one who would judge upon whose right it was be Evincar. Crovax claimed the right to the throne, while Belbe was powerless to stop him because of Volrath's absence. Upon Volrath's return, all of Rath quaked with fear, and was split in alliance, one side to Crovax and one side to Volrath. The two dueled to see who would be Evincar of Rath, and in the end, Crovax won with the help of Ertai, who used magic secretly to stop Volrath's final killing blow. Volrath digressed again to his previous form, and was executed via flowstone injection by Crovax's minions.
