Volokolamskaya (Reserved)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Volokolamskaya (Russian: Волоколамская) is an unopened station on the Moscow Metro's Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line which is located under the Tushino airfield. It was constructed in 1975 as part of the northern extension of the Krasnopresnenskiy radius but never opened.
Moscow's 1960s expansion plans called for a construction of a municipal housing estate on the old airfield, and Volokolamskaya (named after the nearby Volokolamskoe Highway) was to serve it. However, the planned estate never materialized and Volokolamskaya was left unfinished, though it is structurally complete. Attentive Metro travelers can spot the station out the left window of the train between Shchukinskaya and Tushinskaya, especially when a train is travelling in the opposite direction.
Volokolamskaya is a typical pillar-trispan "Novaya Sorokonozhka" design with staircases at opposite ends (the vestibules were never built). It is illuminated by a few dim light bulbs and decorated only by signatures of the people who paid the empty carcass a visit. Even on the pathways there is no safety ditch under the tracks.
The plans for the station looked dim until recently, but since Tushino field often holds large festivals and construction in Moscow has undergone a massive expansion in recent years, the station may yet be put to use after all. Considering that Volokolamskaya is almost complete, it will only take a couple of months to bring it up to operating condition.
This station should not be confused with the planned Volokolamskaya station on the Mitinskiy radius of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line extension which, when opened, would be near the same Volokolamskoe highway.
