[edit] Planned international airport
Almost half of the 10000-feet runway work has been completed; it is expected to operational by December 2006[1]. The terminal will have all modern facilities and is expected to be ready for use by the first quarter of 2007.. The night landing facilities have also been developed during the recent constructions. A new integrated terminal will be constructed at a cost of Rs 95 crore[1]. The construction is being done by M. Venkat Rao Construction Co.
The apron is being built to accommodate at least six wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 767s and its equivalent variants at the same time.[1]
Many of the international airlines have expressed their regards to start from Visakhapatnam, once the facilities have been completed. As Visakhapatnam is situated on the east coast of India, it is nearer to Bangkok, Singapore, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City etc. Many airlines such as Silk Airways, Thai Airways International, Sri Lankan Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Emirates, Royal Nepal Airlines, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Air India have shown interest in the airport.
