The VitalKey is a USB flash drive keychain designed to store medical and health insurance information. Unlike other portable devices that can be used to store medical information entered by the user, Vital Key contains information from the user’s actual medical records as documented in their physician’s office. This is an important distinction - especially in the event of an emergency in which a person unable to speak can still convey medical information to medical staff. Having access to a patient’s medical records provides an emergency room doctor with information about allergies, medications, lab results, and medical history that would alert emergency room doctors to possible complications and help determine the best course of treatment.

When a person orders a VitalKey, they provide their demographic, insurance, and doctors' information. This information is entered into the VitalKey database and VitalKey personnel contact the person’s doctors for the medical record information. The medical record information is added to the person’s file in the database. This information is then downloaded into the VitalKey and then it is is shipped. The information in the data base is stored as a backup in case the person loses their VitalKey.

Also different from other medical information services, VitalKey doesn’t require EMS personnel and emergency to access via the Internet data that is stored remotely. In an emergency, the doctor treating the patient inserts the VitalKey into the USB port on any computer and the patient’s information is displayed.

The VitalKey system also includes decals that patients can display in their homes and cars. Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel are being trained to look for this decal and when found, to locate the VitalKey flash drive.
