The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur (formerly known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), Nagpur) is one of the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established under the scheme sponsored by Government of India and the Maharshtra State Government. The college was established in June 1960 and named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology is one of the 17 National Institutes of Technology engineering college's established by the Indian government. Today, VNIT is an autonomous co-educational engineering college, with 8 undergraduate, 10 graduate programs. Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech. degrees, while the graduate students and postgraduate students earn M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees respectively. VNIT also has an architecture school according B.Arch. degree. VNIT campus is situated on South Ambazari Road between Abhyankar Nagar and Ambazari Dam. The distance of the campus from Nagpur Railway Station is 8 km. and 7 km. from Nagpur Airport.

The College has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. In 2002 it was granted Deemed University Status. An autonomous Board of Governors having representatives of the Central Government, State Government, AICTE, UGC, Teaching Faculty, Industrialists and Technologists manages the institute. The current chairman of Board of Governors of VNIT is Shri S. S. Sohoni (former Secretary to the President of India).
Over these years, the institute has gained recognition as an important National Instituion in the field of Technical Education & Research. According to a recent survey, this Institute is now amongst the top 20 institutes in the country producing human resource capable of coping with the accelerating pace of technological developments.

The institution has an excellent scholastic atmosphere which helps the students in achieving great heights in the pursuit of academic accomplishments. The performance of the students in prestigious national and international examinations like GATE, CAT, GRE bears testimony to this. During every academic year 90-95% students are placed in various industries before they actually pass out from institution most of the industries being software companies.
The institute offers 8 Undergraduate programmes in Engineering of four year duration, one Undergraduate programme in Architecture of five year duration and ten Graduate programmes of two year duration. The institute used to have absolute grading system and a CGPA on a 10 point scale till session 2005-2006. From session 2006-2007 onwards, the institute will be using a relative grading system on a 10 point scale.

Admissions to the undergraduate course is competitive, and done through the AIEEE. Admission to the post-graduate programs require competitive scores in both GATE and an All India Entrance Exam conducted by the admitting Department.
[edit] Infrastructure
The institute has a beautiful campus of about 214 acres (866,000 m²) near Ambazari Lake. All departments and laboratories are housed on the campus. The campus has retained and increased its green cover, rich in flora and fauna.
The Institute has 13 departments of which 9 have received the highest accolade of grade 'A' by AICTE. All the departments are recognized as Quality Improvement Program Centres by the Government of India. The laboratories in various departments have excellent research and testing facilities.

There are seven Boys Hostels and two Girls Hostels. Each hostel is having well equipped Entertainment, Housekeeping, Sports and Mess facilities. For male students, during first semester to fourth semester triple seated and during fifth semester to eighth semester single seated accommodation is provided. For female students of first semester to fourth semester double seated and fifth semester to eighth semester single seated accommodation is provided. Provision for residential accommodation for teaching and non teaching staff of the Institute is also available on the campus.
The library of the institute is 4 decades old having an independent three storied building and housing about hundred thousand books. The library and information resources centre is automated & students and faculty access library information through a campus-wide network of 10/100 Mbit/s lines available round the clock. In addition to the existing library, a multi-storey digital library is being constructed which will have access to all kinds of online journals and technology related websites.
The campus has an Auditorium, Computer Center, Sporting Facilities, Hospital, Post & Telegraph Center, Reprographic, State Bank of India branch with ATM facility, Canteen, Co-op store as well.

The institution has a large pool of highly experienced and accomplished faculty members who have made substantial contributions in their respective fields.

Extracurricular activities include participation in NCC, NSS, SPIC MACAY club, The Quiz Pro Co.,robotics club, literary club, photography and adventure club and IEEE's Student's Chapter. A modern gymnasium and other sports facilities are also available in the campus.
