[edit] Tone

There was a question raised of tone. I ask if the entrance on Handsome Dan such as this excerpt has a more encyclopedic tone: "1933-1937 (died of a broken leg). After a 35 year interval, Handsome Dan II was purchased with pennies donated by the freshman class, and given to coach Ducky Pond. Kidnapped by Harvard students in 1934 the day before the Harvard-Yale football game, he became an apparent victim of Stockholm syndrome; photographs show him happily seated at the foot of the statue of John Harvard in Harvard Yard, having a snack."

I could add countless examples here where the tone and quality of the writing, and the accuracy or references are by far beneath an "encyclopedic standard". The article uses, after all, information that is gleaned from the official website pages of a highly esteemed institution of higher education. That being stated I will offer more references to ensure that it is understood that the article is factual and serves its role in supplying reliable information on its subject. -Jsanstella, ES

We have to take each article one at a time, there are over a million articles on wikipedia and we can't excuse poor tone in one article by saying there is poor tone in another. The concern we have here is that while it makes a good biography type blurb on a website where its expected to be upbeat and positive, it comes off here a bit more promotional. I'm not saying it has to be cleaned up this second, but minor rewording could probably take care of most of the issues.--Crossmr 03:13, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Gotcha. We took care of what you asked and thanks for everything. Jsanstella ES 8.26.06
Okay, so far it looks good. I'll go over it some more in the morning, just remember, don't blank conversations from article talk pages, unless its a clear case of vandalism/abuse. When a talk page grows too long they become archived. You can have a look at some busy articles (like say George W Bush, or any other really busy article) and you'll see links to various archives and the different methods used for doing that. It also gives you an idea of how long a talk page should be before you'd worry about archiving it.--Crossmr 06:50, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
