Vinci (Rise of Legends)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vinci are one of three main civilizations in the 2006 PC real-time strategy game, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends. They are a technological civilization with a steampunk theme whose units and buildings are heavily influenced by the works and designs of the 16th century Italian Renaissance inventor and artist, Leonardo da Vinci. Their units reflect upon his inventions, especially the flying units, some of which use his screw-propeller design. Others seem to be designed on the level of technology available in the late-19th century. The basic infantry unit, the Imperial Musketeer, wields a Flintlock rifle.
In-game, the Vinci are not one nation but a loose confederacy of city states, similar to Italy during the Renaissance. During the single player campaign, the player takes the role of Giacomo, a Vinci hero and inventor who seeks to avenge his older brother's death. Their national power, Industrial Devastation, allows them to level a wide area of land anywhere on the map, stunning and damaging any units on it, as well as damaging enemy buildings. The Vinci start out with an extra building, the Prototype factory, at the beginning of the game, which is used to research special units and tactics.

[edit] National Power
The Vinci harness the might of Industrial Devastation as their National Power. Gigantic bores and drills rise up from beneath the surface of the earth, churning the ground – and anything unfortunate enough to be upon it – into dust. Buildings and units caught within the radius of this powerful attack are severely damaged, and smaller units are knocked down and temporarily stunned. In order to use Industrial Devastation, a player must first spend Research Points to purchase the Mining technology track, and with further researching, the power and radius of this attack increases.

[edit] Special District
The Industrial District provides many unique bonuses for the Vinci civilization and gives the player Invention Points, one per District, which is displayed next to the Research button.
[edit] Heroes
Giacomo Giamba, Inventor of Miana is a hero and the main character during the single player campaign. He uses a moderately powerful grenade launcher to attack. Giacomo is a skilled inventor and leader of the Vinci city-state of Miana. The campaign starts with the murder of his older brother, Petruzzo (the original heir to the throne) by the Doge of Venucci (Giacomo's archrival). Because of his brother's death, he becomes the leader of Miana and embarks on a quest to defeat the Doge and avenge his brother until he realizes that something darker and more evil is at hand. He gives 2 research points initially at level 1, with a one-point increase for every subsequent level he's at. Giacomo also improves all clockwork units, and players gain one clockwork man for each of Giacomo's levels. He bears slight resemblance to a young Edward Teller.
His abilities are:
- Augmentation - Heals allied units and increases unit speed and attack power.
- Sonic Boom - Creates a destructive wave of sound.
- Demolition Team - Summons bomb-laden Clockwork Men.
- Super Armor - Shields friendly units in a wide area from all enemy damage for a short period of time.
Alessadri The Doge, Ruler of Venucci is the powerful iron-fisted ruler of the Vinci city state of Venucci. His main weapon appears to be a high-powered Cuotl laser mounted on the arm of his mechanized walker (where he found the laser, though, was unexplained). During the campaign, he is shown to be a ruthless dictator and brilliant strategist, although he is not as technologically gifted. The Doge increases creation rate for all units. He improves Steam Cannons, Juggernauts, and units built at Doge's Glorious Statue.
Among his abilities are:
- Poison Cloud - Creates a toxic fog that damages enemies,
- Pain Ray - Fires a concentrated beam of energy at an enemy unit.
- Siege Laser - Heavily damages building or city. Lowers number of troops needed to storm a city.
- Doge Hammer - Fires a massive artillery round at an enemy.
Lenora, Pirata Captain is the leader of the Pirata, a group of aerial mercenaries who have served the Vinci city states. She is the Vinci flying hero, and as such, costs more to summon, as do all flying heroes. During the SPC, Lenora is involved in a romantic relationship with Giacamo. She increases the attack range and line-of-sight for units built at the Aerodrome, and she gives extra Wealth income (+10 for every level).
Among her abilities are:
- Boosters - Enhances Lenora's speed, health, and attack power. She cannot use her other abilities while boosters are active.
- Piracy - Captures enemy units and brings them under Lenora's control.
- Sky Burst - Does massive damage to other air units.
- Cluster Bomb - Scatters hugely powerful bombs across a wide area.
[edit] Master Unit: Land Leviathan
The Land Leviathan is the Vinci master unit. Modelled after a giant mechanical spider, the Land Leviathan is the most powerful unit in the Vinci army. Roughly the size of a small city, the Land Leviathan is armed with a weapons array composed of rocket launchers, anti-air machine guns and two large siege drills on its "forearms". It deals massive trample damage to smaller units, often 'one-hitting' them. The Land Leviathan possesses exceedingly heavy armor, absorbing an enormous amount of firepower before going down for the count. It also has the ability to power down and repair itself, during which the unit cannot attack, but takes less damage. It can burrow very quickly to other places on the map, and launch an apocalyptic single-target missile called the Devastator from its arm. It upgrades into the King Leviathan, giving it even stronger weapons and armor.
