[edit] Background
Vincent is a tenth grade student who, when he was a freshman, was the victim of a brutal and humiliating beating at the hands of several 11th grade jocks. The beating and subsequent forced humiliation he was made to endure resulted in him finding his reputation ruined and the nickname "Butters" (a nod to the hapless South Park character Butters Stotch) was given to him by the school's student body as a result. Vincent vowed revenge and that following fall, the jocks who had both beaten/humiliated him and those who did nothing to save him and instead laughed at his suffering and helped spread the story of the incident and the "Butters" nickname, found themselves having failed mandatory drug tests, essentially barring them from playing sports in their final year of high school.
Veronica Mars was drawn to "Butters" as a suspect, mainly due to the fact that her best friend Wallace (who was present when Vincent was beaten but had done nothing to save him, as well as spread the story and the "Butters" nickname throughout the school) found himself as one of the athletes who failed their drug test. Wallace plead his innocence, convincing Veronica to investigate "Butters" as the person responsible for his false positive test results. When Veronica confronted Vincent they had the following exchange:
- Veronica: Butters?
- Vincent: [bitterly] "Butters" is the name of the weak loser suck-up on South Park. "Butters" implies soft, fat—
- Veronica: But oh, so delicious.
- Vincent: Vincent is my given name.
Shortly afterwords, Veronica saw Vice-Principal Van Clemmons walk down the hallway and acknowledge Vincent as his son. This caused Veronica to further suspect "Butters" as the culprit, though Veronica quickly changed her mind when she discovered evidence the real culprit was a conclave of parents who rigged the drug tests of the top athletes of Veronica's school so that their children could gain the spots opened up in the wake of the mass suspension of athletes.
"Butters" has been a quasi-regular since then, often sparing verbally with Veronica over her constant accusations of the character plotting against the more popular students at the school over his being bullied. This was further fueled when "Butters"'s only friend was killed along with several other classmates in an accident that may or may not have been part of an elaborate plot to kill Veronica. When his friend's parents sued the school over their son's death, someone began to target the family, leaving them reminders of their son to torment the parents about their son's death. When the family were left a recorded message of their son's voice, Veronica tracked the recording to "Butters". Veronica discovered that "Butters" and the deceased student secretly ran the local pirate radio station that was infamous for its vicious slandering of the popular cliques at school.
Veronica accused "Butters" of aiding his father, Vice-Principal Van Clemmons of trying to get the parents of his friend to drop their lawsuit in exchange for his dad turning a blind eye to his son's illegal radio operation. But "Butters" told Veronica that he hadn't had much contact with his friend since the summer, when he came back from an anti-gay brainwashing camp acting like a jerk who only cared about getting a girlfriend. This led to Veronica learning that "Butters" was innocent again and that the real culprit was the friend's boyfriend, who sought to make his boyfriend's parents suffer the same way they made their son suffer in regards to his homosexuality.
Since then, Veronica and "Butters" have remained enemies. Adding to the strain are recent events involving Vice-Principal Clemmons, who recently manipulated Veronica so as to get the school's Principal ousted and him promoted to the position, which grants him absolute power over the school.

[edit] Notes
- The VM Butters always being accused of plotting against the popular kids is in some ways similar to the SP Butters' unsuccessful plans, as alter ego Professor Chaos, to get revenge on the less wimpy South Park characters.
