Viluppuram is a city and a municipality in Viluppuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the headquarters of Villuppuram District. It is the Second largest District in the State which lies in the middle of the Tiruchirapalli to Chennai National Highways No. 45.It has a major junction well connected with the state. The main source of income is agriculture. The percentage of literacy was low until early 1980s but since then has had a constant improvement and now is around 75 percent.

Villupuram District lies between 11 38' 25" N and 12 20' 44" S: 78 15' 00" W and 79 42' 55" E with an area of 722203 Hec. It was carved out from the South Arcot District on 30.09.1993 and was rechristened as Villupuram District. The residual part of the erstwhile South Arcot district was named as Cuddalore District.
It is surrounded on East and South by Cuddalore District. The West by Salem and Dharmapuri District and on the North by Thiruvannamalai and Kanchipuram District.

At present Villupuram district comprises of 1490 Revenue Villages, 4 Revenue Divisions, 8 Administrative Taluks, 22 Blocks, 16 Town Panchayat Unions, 1104 Village Panchayats and 2 Municipalities.

- Gingee Fort, Kalvarayan Hills is one of a few places of interest.

- Thirukoilur, Thiruvamathur, Thiruvakkarai are some of the famous temples situated near Villupuram.
pondicherry is just 35 to 40 kms from villupuram.

To begin with it has the Ace of schools " The Sacred heart Convent Higer secondary Anglo indian school - the only anglo-indian school in the entire district, its run by CSST nuns (sisters).
In addition to the Arignar Anna Government Ats College , Villupuram has quite a few professional colleges like Elumalai Polytechnic ,IFET engineering College, V.R.S Engineering College, Mailam Engineering College attractiong candidates from other states like Andhra Pradhesh and a few NRI students also.
It has many leading schools like Sacred Heart Convent Higher Secondary School,Ramakrishna Matriculation School,E.S matriculation schools etc.Siga Residential School attracts students from other districts also.
The general geological formation of the District appears to be simple. The greater part of it is covered by the Metamorphic rocks belonging to Genesis family. There are also three great groups of sedimentary rocks belonging to different geological periods. The Kalrayan Hills in the North represents a continuous range of hills covered with some thorny forests and vegetation. Among the hills, the most beautiful part of the district lies round about the Gingee Hills.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Viluppuram had a population of 95,439. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Viluppuram has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 73%. In Viluppuram, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
