Viewtiful Joe (character)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viewtiful Joe is the main character in the game series Viewtiful Joe by Capcom. He is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker in the games, and by Jason Palmer in the animated series.

Joe's last name could be speculated to be Black due to the fact that in the Viewtiful Joe 2 instruction booklet his father is called Jet Black. Black is possibly not Jet's last name and therefore would not be Joe's.

Joe is a movie fanatic who holds Captain Blue as the greatest superhero of all time. One day he is watching a Captain Blue movie with his girlfriend Silvia. Silvia wants to fool around but Joe is only interested in the movie. In the movie Captain Blue (Piloting the Six Majin) is defeated by a shadowy figure later revealed to be King Blue (the omnipotent form of Captain Blue) who then pulls Silvia into the movie. The Six Majin then attempts to stop King Blue only to be punched through the screen. Six Majin takes Joe with it back into the movie. When Joe gets there he is confronted by Captain Blue who gives him a V-Watch. This allows him to transform into his alter ego Viewtiful Joe whenever Joe says the word 'henshin'. It is not explained why Blue helps Joe since he is the main villain of the story. After that, he sets out on his quest to find Silvia with little worry, and doesn't seem to really care what happens to her (however, he does show he cares about her later in the game). Joe seems to be a goofy show-off, but he does have a strong sense of justice.

Viewtiful Joe has the power to slow down the movie, speed up, and to zoom into the picture, much like camera effects seen in movies like The Matrix, all of which are beneficial to the game. At first he is only able to use his powers in movies; However in Viewtiful Joe 2 he demonstrated, when in the real world, that his V-Watch will respond when in front of an audience, enabling him to transform out of the movie. His inability is again apparent in Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble when he attempts to transform with nobody around, this is solved when Silvia points her special camcorder, The V-Cam, at Joe.

In his recent Nintendo DS debut 'Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble' (In Japan 'Viewtiful Joe Scratch!') Joe gained the additional abilities of Slide, Split and Scratch. Split being mostly for solving puzzles and Scratch for combat. Slide bears a great resemblance to 'Zoom' from the main titles, which, along with mach speed, did not appear in the game.

During Joe's first adventure he had the task of naming himself, (Giving himself a Henshin title), which was later inspired to him by Alastor the Stylish, Joe's rival and a boss in the game. After his defeat, a short flash back of Joe's attacks from Alastor's perspective plays in the cutscene, after the barrage, he exclaimed "Viewtiful!". Joe accepted the adjective and was known as "Viewtiful Joe" thereafter.

Joe's arsenal also includes Voomerangs, boomerang-like blade weapon thrown from Joe's helmet (in which the make up the "V" emblem"); and Shocking Pink, which is a short fused bomb, used instead by Silvia after the first game.
