The Victoria Building was historically the administrative heart of the University of Liverpool, housing the University Library as well as offices for most of the senior academic staff.
It is situated towards the top of Brownlow Hill in Liverpool and opened in 1892. The architect was Alfred Waterhouse. Today it is rarely used; however there are plans to turn it into an important university building again by 2008.
The building is constructed from red bricks, and it was the inspiration for the term red brick, which was coined by Professor Edgar Allison Peers, writing under the pseudonym of Bruce Truscot he published two books dealing with problems and policies within modern Universities; Redbrick University (1943) and Redbrick and these Vital Days (1945).
