Vice Admiral is the third highest commissioned Starfleet officer rank in the Star Trek fictional universe. This flag rank is analogous to the actual rank of vice admiral, the third highest military rank – below admiral and above rear admiral – in many navies, particularly the United States Navy after which the rank system in Starfleet is largely based.

Vice admirals who appear or are mentioned in Star Trek canon include:

Additionally, Colonel West in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country wears a vice admiral's insignia with corresponding flag officer's (as opposed to a field officer, which the rank of colonel traditionally is) jacket with gold piping. It is unclear whether an organization within Starfleet uses the same insignia but different nomenclature as the rest of Starfleet, or whether "Colonel" is an unofficial monicker (possibly related to the character's real-life inspiration, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North[citation needed]).

[edit] Footnotes

Note 1: Kirk's rank as vice admiral is not stated in dialogue. However, producers and costume designers at the time indicate he holds the rank of vice admiral in these films[citation needed].
