Vice Admiral is the third highest commissioned Starfleet officer rank in the Star Trek fictional universe. This flag rank is analogous to the actual rank of vice admiral, the third highest military rank – below admiral and above rear admiral – in many navies, particularly the United States Navy after which the rank system in Starfleet is largely based.
Vice admirals who appear or are mentioned in Star Trek canon include:
- Vice Admiral Aaron – TNG: "Conspiracy", "Shades of Gray"
- Vice Admiral Matthew Dougherty – Star Trek: Insurrection
- Vice Admiral Fitzpatrick – TOS: "The Trouble With Tribbles"
- Vice Admiral Maxwell Forrest – Star Trek: Enterprise
- Vice Admiral Fujisaki – DS9: "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges"
- Vice Admiral Gromek – TNG: "The Emissary"
- Vice Admiral Anthony Haftel – TNG: "The Offspring"
- Vice Admiral Hayes – Star Trek: First Contact; Voy: "Hope and Fear", "Life Line"
- Vice Admiral Thomas Henry – TNG: "The Drumhead"
- Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway – Star Trek: Nemesis
- Vice Admiral Janeway (Kathryn Janeway's father) – Voy: "Coda"
- Vice Admiral James T. Kirk1 – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
- Vice Admiral Leyton – DS9: "Homefront", "Paradise Lost"
- Vice Admiral Nakamura – TNG: "The Measure of a Man", "Phantasms", "All Good Things..."
- Vice Admiral Alynna Nechayev – TNG and DS9 (see main entry for specific appearances)
- Vice Admiral Owen Paris – Voy: "Persistence of Vision", "Thirty Days"
- Vice Admiral William Ross – DS9 (see main entry for specific appearances)
Additionally, Colonel West in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country wears a vice admiral's insignia with corresponding flag officer's (as opposed to a field officer, which the rank of colonel traditionally is) jacket with gold piping. It is unclear whether an organization within Starfleet uses the same insignia but different nomenclature as the rest of Starfleet, or whether "Colonel" is an unofficial monicker (possibly related to the character's real-life inspiration, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North[citation needed]).
[edit] Footnotes
Note 1: Kirk's rank as vice admiral is not stated in dialogue. However, producers and costume designers at the time indicate he holds the rank of vice admiral in these films[citation needed].
