Founded in 1919, the club is only a small local association with an unremarkable history. With the re-organization of German football under the Third Reich in 1933, VfB found themselves shaped into one of the many regime-sponsored, politically safe sides representing the military or police. They played in the Nordmark Gauliga from 1934 to 1942 as Polizei SV Lübeck. The next two seasons were spent in the Gauliga Schleswig Holstein under the name SG Ordnungspolizei Lübeck. Throughout this period they were a mid-table side whose best performance was a single second-place finish. During the last year of the war conditions made play in the Gauliga untenable and the club participated only in local contests.

After the war VfB Lübeck earned a place in the newly formed Oberliga Nord. The club spent the next decades bouncing up and down between II and III tier leagues. In 1969, a second-place finish in their division earned them a spot in the promotion round for the Bundesliga where they managed only a single tie in eight games. After 1974, they slipped from the ranks of second tier teams to fourth division Landesliga Schleswig-Holstein. They recovered a place in the 2.Bundesliga just over two decades later and resumed their role as an "elevator side", moving frequently between the second and third divisions. In 2004, the team reached the semi-finals of the German Cup, but lost to Werder Bremen in extra-time. The club currently plays in the Regionalliga Nord (III) where they have earned two consecutive third place finishes coming into this season.
