[edit] License tagging for Image:01rsw.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:01rsw.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 15:04, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Rsw.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rsw.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

What specifically do you require help with? If it is about this image I see your note below saying the image doesn't have a (c) on it anywhere. You should be aware that copyright is automatic and implicit, lack of a (c) on an image does not mean that no copyright is held. --pgk(talk) 16:52, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

My understanding of copyright law is that an artist must register for the ability to protect an image, etc. And the presence of a "(c)" is what denotes that it is indeed protected. Is expressed permission from the owner of the work enough to clear doubt?Verdad 16:56, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Well your understanding is wrong. Any creative work is automatically protected by copyright, the US allows registration of copyrights which can impact damages claimed for infringment but it is in no way necessary to be afforded copyright protection. Many countries (e.g. the UK) have no concept of copyright registration at all. The copyright article has quite a lot on the subject. Permission to use the image is essential however we cannot use the image if permission is only given to use it on wikipedia, it has to be under a free license like the GFDL, or creative commons (Not the non-commercial variants aren't allowed, the share alike ones are fine however). --pgk(talk) 17:09, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Images

Hey, I took a look at those images, but can't quite work it out. Is this where you originally found the image? Do you know who was the person who made the image? Is it possible to contact the educational institution and ask them? Basically, we need to know the creator of the image to figure out what license it is under. - FrancisTyers 21:08, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

PS. Good for getting an account :) - FrancisTyers 21:09, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, it came from that cba.ua.edu site. I forget who drew that thing. There is a copy of it in the building of RSW's office. It doesn't have a (c) anywhere on it.Verdad 21:17, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately as pgk explains above, stuff is automatically copyrighted. For most sites on the internet, this isn't important, as they generally assume an image published on the internet is "public domain" and don't intend to republish or make money out of it, but for Wikipedia this isn't good enough -- I forget the precise reasons, but I suspect it comes from keeping everything able to be sold commercially. Its such a low resolution image that I can't anticipate the original author allowing it to be licensed reasonably. If you could contact the University to find out the original author or copyright status that would be good. If you like, I'll do it, just leave me a note on my talk page :) PS. Thanks for the barnstar! - FrancisTyers 19:44, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I categorised the image as "Fair use", which I think it is, a more accurate license would be good though. :) - FrancisTyers 14:31, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I have no idea what all this stuff is. As you can tell, I will be confused for a very long time.Verdad 15:04, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Schoenhof Weil

I checked out the article, and its definately looking good! - FrancisTyers 21:11, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

I've been trying to learn as I go. I've used a lot of "templates...?" from the article on MA and from Winton M. Blount's article. Basicaly, I copied a lot of the code out and changed the info for my article.Verdad 21:17, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your comments on Weil

For the record, I never said anything negative about Weil. In fact, during the discussion I stated that Weil "seems like an amazing person."[1] During my research I read this very article and that is one of the reasons I made that statement. However, the article doesn't change historical fact that MA was started as a seg academy. One did not have to be a racist to found a segregation academy. You seem to think that anyone who supported the founding of a segregated school must be a racist or a horrible person. That is not the case. By your reasoning anyone who ever voted for George Wallace, or even lived in Alabama during that time period, must have been a racist, which is totally wrong. Anyway, I'm not going to reopen debate on any of this. What I will do, though, is strongly suggest you keep reading up on Wikipedia policies. Your new articles apeshit and brownnoser are definitions, which are not allowed on Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_not_a_dictionary), while your article 2002 midterm Congressional elections already exists at United States House election, 2002. Best, --Alabamaboy 20:00, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

) What happened to your Wikibreak? Do we have an addict on our hands.

I guess we will always disagree. And we shouldn't debate this. It's only destructive. To me, starting a seg school is supporting segregation, which is racist behavior. One (or two) could go on ad nauseum about that. I'm sure there are plenty of people who see things your way as well. It concerns me though, that those with my frame of thought (or similar) would see Weil as a racist, when clearly he is not.

Apeshit and brownnoser are definitions and probably should go to Wiktionary. I have no idea how to move them. For the time being, a lot of editors are comfortable with lots of definitions on wikipedia, calling them vocabulary stubs.

The House election is different from a midterm election. Verdad 20:42, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
