This List of Regal Rights which I correctly present is only 40% of my "White" Inhertiance as 100% can no longer be Transferred. "Master: I was right in calling thee painstaking! There is another, but a more hidden reason. For just as, in a game of chess, there are certain grades of combatants and they proceed or stand still by certain laws or limitations, some presiding and others advancing: so, in this, some preside, some assist by reason of their office, and no one is free to exceed the fixed laws; as will be manifest from what is to follow.

"Moreover, as in chess the battle is fought between kings, so in this it is chiefly between two that the conflict takes place and the war is waged - the treasurer, namely, and the sheriff who sits there to render account; the others sitting by as judges, to see and to judge."


That is an extract from the Dialogue of the Exchequer, written c. 1177-1179 by Richard Fitz Nigel, treasurer to Henry II of England, taken from Patrick Geary, *Readings in Medieval History*, Broadview, Ontario, 1997 (ISBN: 1-55111-158-6).

I thought it may help people envisage what's going in a little- understood area of Harnic feudal government, namely, the Exchequer and the collection of revenues.

You'll note that the sheriffs must account for their revenue and expenditure ever year to the treasurer (the Harnic term is Chancellor of the Exchequer). Fitz Nigel goes on to explain that the treasurer has the same duty to the king.

The imagery of the account-taking as a deadly serious game of chess between rivals is quite evocative.

I hope, among other things, it may help people realise just why Troda Dariune holds such power in Kaldor - IMO he must be rather good at this game (perhaps he's even Kaldor's answer to Fitz Nigel himself). And, after all, it's fun to charter an accountant, and sail upon the wide accountant-sea...

A brief plug for my source: Geary's book is basically 800-pages of translated primary sources, divided chronologically, thematically and by region.

It is impossible to give anywhere near a comprehensive list of its contents, but among them are the Rule of St Benedict, The Huntingdonshire Eyre of 1286, Gregory the Great's Dialogue on the Life of St Benedict, English trial transcripts of the trial of Joan of Arc (and even though it was many years ago, and this is our side of the story, reading it makes me somewhat ashamed of my nation, and very, very proud of La Pucelle), Einhard's Life of Charlemagne (which is really something special - what a *dude* he was!) and much more.

Oh, and for HarnManor fans, there's also plans of Wharram Percy (yeah, I know you can't move for plans of Wharram Percy, but, hey...)

Well worth a place on anybody's bookshelf, I'd say. I don't know what the prices of it are like in North America, but over here in England it cost me #20. Worth it at twice the price. -- Andy Staples
