Vergeltungswaffen is German for "retaliation weapons", and was a term assigned during World War II by the Nazi propaganda ministry to a few revolutionary "superweapons". These weapons were to turn the tide of war, and are not to be confused with Wunderwaffen, or wonder weapons. The difference is that wunderwaffen are tactical battlefield weapons, intended to defeat specific military units easily, whereas vergeltungswaffen were strategic theatre weapons, intended to travel long distances or overcome powerful aerial defenses to destroy military supplies or civilian facilities well behind the front lines.
