Venus in Furs (song)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Venus in Furs" is a song by The Velvet Underground, originally released on the album The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967). It was recorded during a stay in Hollywood in 1966. Inspired by the book of the same name by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the music featured John Cale's cacophonous viola. The song deals with themes of sado-masochism, bondage and submission.

The song was used in the Oliver Stone film The Doors (1991) and in Gus Van Sant's Last Days (2005). It was covered by former Tubeway Army and Gary Numan bassist Paul Gardiner in 1984, by The Smashing Pumpkins in 1989, by The Melvins on the split single "Here She Comes Now/Venus in Furs" with Nirvana in 1991, by Gothic band Christian Death, by heavy metal band Monster Magnet on the album Monolithic Baby! in 2005, and by cabaret band DeVotchKa on the EP Curse Your Little Heart in 2006.
