Venom is a character in the Guilty Gear series of fighting games who first appears in Guilty Gear X: By Your Side. Like many other characters in the series, Venom uses a very unusual weapon, a pool cue. Many of his special attacks involve the use of the stick and billiard balls. Of note, Venom is the only character officially stated as being homosexual (care of the latest Guilty Gear drama CD "Knight of Knives" released at the end of 2004), although this was heavily implied throughout his story sequences in the games and in the Guilty Gear novel "The Butterfly and Its Gale".

[edit] Gameplay style

Venom excels as a long range character; however, since his projectile attacks don't deal large amounts of damage, his optimal fighting style is as a "pressure" fighter. This means that most of his offensives start from setting up Ball Formations and then locking the opponent down in the "corner", punishing any mistakes should the opponent try to get out. However, against certain characters, it is safest (and even easier) to control the fight by staying at a distance and covering the field with pool balls, punishing mistakes as appropriate. (For example, against a good Slayer player who knows how to fully utilize Slayer's BDC(back dash cancel), Venom should stay farther back, since Slayer does not have any projectile attacks of his own and he has to take the initiative to come closer to Venom.) However, it is also understood that Venom is also a skilled "rushdown" character with various aerial attacks that seem noteworthy. His projectile offensive is the key however; Venom chains his projectiles more easily than most, if not all other characters, while he still has the means to perform combos normally(i.e. his fists, feet and cue stick). But his cue stick in most combos gives him the length he needs to chain his projectiles with melee combos(he has other moves for this too, but his cue stick has farther reach although it is somewhat slow). The most interesting thing about Venom is that he is arguably the most complex character in the game to use, hence the often heard statement that no two players who use Venom play alike.

[edit] Story

[edit] Background

Venom was an orphan rescued by the Assassin's Guild. He showed promise except for one thing: he was reluctant to kill people. The Guild was prepared to execute him when he was rescued by the former leader of the Guild, Zato-1. Zato saw Venom's potential and took him in for his own apprentice. Venom is eternally grateful to Zato for this, and even pledges his loyalty to him even though Zato is dead.

[edit] Guilty Gear X: By Your Side

Around this time, Zato-1 goes missing, so Venom sets off to find his master. Eventually, he finds Zato-1, but Eddie has almost taken complete control of Zato-1. In one ending, Venom defeats Eddie, but Zato seems to be inert, if not catatonic. In the other ending, Venom feigns defeat to lure Eddie into his own body, whereupon he reveals his trickery to Eddie and indicates that he will sacrifice himself to kill Eddie and save Zato.

[edit] Guilty Gear XX: The Midnight Carnival

Venom's story mode begins with Slayer's dissolution of the Assassins Guild. Angry at the perceived disrespect for Zato-1's authority as leader of the Guild (albeit a missing one), Venom decides to train himself to increase his skills and eventually take on Slayer as a way of protecting all that Venom has left of Zato. In one of his endings, Venom meets and defeats Slayer, although, as Slayer wryly points out, Venom is still not strong enough to destroy him. Venom apparently couldn't care less, as he then proceeds to lock up Slayer in a chained, iron coffin. In another ending, Venom is distracted by a chance encounter with Eddie and gives chase. He catches up soon, but after fighting and defeating Eddie, he soon collapses and dies. In his third ending, he also meets Eddie by accident, but when he finds him, Millia has already defeated Eddie and killed Zato. Enraged, Venom kills Millia and then pledges his loyalty and life to Zato's soul.

[edit] Music References

Venom's name comes from the British heavy metal band Venom. His attack "Carcass Raid" could be a reference to the band Carcass, and his "Dark Angel" overdrive is a reference to the thrash metal band of the same name. Venom's background music, 'A solitude that asks nothing in return', is a near-copy of the song Breed to Breathe by Napalm Death, sans the lyrics and the intro. His Instant Kill, "Dim Bomber" is named "Dimmu Borgir" in Japan, the name of a Norwegian black metal band.
