Velu Thampi Dalawa

Velayudhan Chempaka Raman Tampi , or Velu Thampi(1765 -1809) was the Dalawa of Travancore(1801-1809) during the reign of Balarama Varma who ruled from 1798 to 1810.

He born in Talakkulam of Nagercoil in 1764.

Velu Thampi was a Karyakkar or Tahsildar in Talakkulam in the Kingdom of Travancore during the reign of Bala Ramavarma, who becam ruler at the age of Sixteen.A period of misrule followed, under the influence of Jayanthan Sankaran Namboodiri,who had become dewan after usurping the ministership from the able Raja Kesavadas.Maladministration and corruption by Jayantan Sankaran Nambutiri along Sankara Narayana Chetti and Mathu Tarakan led to a rebellion Velu Thampi and Chempaka Raman Pillai. The King was compelled to dismiss the dewan and his friends. This revolt made him the Commerce minister(known as mulaku madishilakaran).

He Committed Suicide in 1809 at Mannadi Temple to escape capture from British.(his brother padmanabhan thampy was along with him)
