Vectrix

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vectrix is the first commercially available high performance electric scooter. It is capable of over 60 mph (50mph is reached in a little under 7 seconds) with maximum torque available from 0 revs, a characteristic of electric motors. It has under 250 parts, as opposed to 2500 for a conventionally powered scooter, and has a range of 68 miles at 25mph, a typical commuting speed.

This bike uses NiMH batteries with a claimed life/recharge life of 10 years/1500 recharges replacement cost of the battery is said to be around 3000US or almost 1/3 the cost of the bike. The official site has a cost comparison 'over 4 years' with a gas bike using the above figures, but if the quote below is correct, the battery would have to be replaced after only a few years of heavy use which would more than cover the cost saving on a gas bike. Deterioration in performance would also reduce the speed/range quite a lot.

[edit] quote:

re the recharge life of NiMH batteries from Isidor Buchmann [1]

"Limited service life - the performance starts to deteriorate after 200-300 cycles if repeatedly deeply cycled."
