[edit] First issue of Vatican euro coins (2002-2005)
The first version of Vatican euro coins featured an effigy of the late Pope John Paul II.
For images of the common side and a detailed description of the coins, see Euro coins.
[edit] Second issue of Vatican euro coins (April 2005)
Following the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005, the Vatican issued special coins during the period of Sede Vacante depicting the emblem of the Apostolic Chamber (i.e. two crossed keys beneath an umbrella) and the coat of arms of the Cardinal Chamberlain (see here).[1]
[edit] Third issue of Vatican euro coins
From now on, newly minted coins will feature the effigy of Pope Benedict XVI. All the coins carry the inscription "Città del Vaticano" and the twelve stars of Europe. The Vatican issued the first set of Euro coins with the effigy of Pope Benedict XVI on April 27, 2006. The new design has been publicised in the Official Journal of the European Union[2].
