Vasily Agapkin

Vasily Agapkin born Tambov, Russia (1884-1964) was a military orchestra conductor, composer, author of the well-known march "Farewell of Slavianka". In 1912-1915 he studied at Tambov musical school and later served here in the forces. In 1941 and 1945 he conducted the orchestras which took part in the historical reviews on the Red Square in Moscow.
Vasily Ivanovich Agapkin(1884-1964). After the revolution of 1917 Agapkin became a functionary of NKVD. However he was not involved in their crimes. He was the leader of the orchestra of this secret service. Years later it was Agapkin who lead the combined military orchestra during the famous Parade on the Red Square on the November,7th of 1941."Farewell of Slavianka" was one of the four marches that were played in that Parade. The song was written in 1912. In 1945 he had also conducted the orchestra on the Red Square in a Victory Parade of WW2. His music has appeared in many films including the classic Soviet movie (1960) and the modern Russian submariner movie, 72 Meters (1986).
