Varzim Sport Club (IPA: [vɐɾ'zĩ spɔɾ 'klub(ɨ)]) is a Portuguese football (soccer) team. It was founded in 1915 and currently plays in the Liga de Honra - the second division of Portuguese football.

Varzim Sport Club was founded in December 25, 1915, then named Varzim Foot-Ball Club.

Varzim SC is a cradle of talents as they are the case of: Helder Postiga and Bruno Alves (FC Porto), Milhazes (Rio Ave), Geraldo (Paços de Ferreira) being also the plantel squad made by 70% of players created in their young layers as: Ricardo, Alexandre, Pedro Santos, Nuno Ribeiro, Tito, Emanuel and Pedrinho all habitually in the eleven's helping to maintain lives the "mystic varzinista." Historical players: Vata, Lucio, Rui Barros, Miranda, Alexandre. It has historical rivalry with Rio Ave FC.

[edit] Stadium controversy

Varzim has its own stadium, near the beach, and close to other sports equipments in the north zone of the town. Nevertheless, due to real estate speculation, the value of the ground (29 million euros), and the clubs finance crisis, it will have a new stadium facing of the Municipal Stadium in the city park, and have its debts paid as a contract promise.

This is a major concern in the city, the company, a Portuguese-Spanish group, will only pay that amount of money if the city authorizes it to built a skyscraper. Despite the area already has towers reaching 80 metres (263 foot), there's a local lobby against towers in the city due to the 1980's unappealing urbanization period. There is also the City Park Stadium issue in the City Park: the opposition party in the city council believes it is unnecessary to built another stadium and the club should play in the City Park Stadium (reorganized and with more seats), but the Mayor, Macedo Vieira stated that the city park stadium is for the people, including the local people's football league, but it will offer ground for the club in the city park, shrinking the city park area which has only 0.8 square kilometres. The ground in the city park will always be of the city, not of the club, thus some club supporters disagree. As of 2006, the club is currently searching for alternatives on where to build the stadium in or out of the park, using city's ground or buying, but the grounds are exceptionally high priced, even inland due to the current real estate boom. The project for the new stadium was unveiled recently.
