Varsity Club
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Varsity Club was a professional wrestling heel stable in the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions and World Championship Wrestling.
[edit] History
The Varsity Club was formed in the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions by Kevin Sullivan when he recruited the University of Michigan's Rick Steiner and Syracuse University's Mike Rotunda in late 1987. They were heels and they wore their letterman jackets to the ring and bragged about how superior they were due to their amateur wrestling background. The only problem for them was when Rotunda and Steiner would bicker with each other over their alma maters.
In January 1988, Rotunda won the NWA World TV Title from Nikita Koloff (with Sullivan's help) and gave his Florida Heavyweight Title to Steiner. In February, they started a feud with Jimmy Garvin because Sullivan wanted Precious. Garvin got help from his "brother" Ron and "Dr. Death" Steve Williams.
In late 1988, Sullivan and Rotunda "broke" Garvin's leg which ended that feud for a while. Steiner finally had enough of Rotunda and left in December and took his TV Title briefly. The Varsity Club then replaced him with Dr. Death (who himself was from the University of Oklahoma), and feuded with Eddie Gilbert and Steiner while Sullivan chased after Gilbert's then-wife, Missy Hyatt. They soon added Dan Spivey and they tried to win the World Tag Team Titles from the Road Warriors. Williams and Rotunda finally did so in April 1989, but the Varsity Club was "suspended" and disbanded the following month.
The Varsity Club had a brief reformation in WCW in 1999 when Sullivan, Rotunda and Steiner reformed at Starrcade on December 19, 1999. They were Jim Duggan's partners but turned on him during the match. They also brought along a cheerleader, Leia Meow, whom they made do pushups and to bounce on a trampoline at ringside. They disbanded in late January 2000 after a brief freud with Ron and Don Harris.
In September 2000, Williams and Rotunda reformed their team, under the name Varsity Club 2000, in All Japan Pro Wrestling, where Williams had been a regular since the original stable's breakup. Despite winning the promotion's annual World's Strongest Tag League tournament in December, they were never able to enjoy much success afterwards due to Rotundo's injuries and the phasing out of foreign talent left from the All Japan promotional system before the Pro Wrestling NOAH split.
