Vanilla slice
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vanilla slice is a type of cake. It consists of a thick custard sauce, which is traditionally flavoured with vanilla or chocolate, and which is sandwiched between flaky puff pastry or filo pastry and iced with either vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry or passion fruit icing.
It is commonly sold in milk bars and cake shops in Australia and is sometimes referred to as a 'Snot Block' due to the consistency of the custard. [1]
They are also popular in the north of England.
It is probably a version of the 'Napoleon' which may have originated in France or Italy, though the filling is not always custard, and can be savoury (such as spinach and cheese). Another variation popular in England is the Bavarian Slice which has a layer of raspberry or strawberry jam and rippled icing, although there is no evidence that this is a traditional Bavarian dish.
