Vana

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vana is also a name for sea urchins in Hawaii. Vana injury is relatively common as people accidentally step on sea urchins. The spines themselves are comprised of caclium carbonate, the same material that makes up sea shells. Most sea urchin spines are absorbed by your body in 3 weeks, but there are some cases when it takes much much longer. Vana also release a protein toxin that causes pain. The toxin is denatured by vinegar which is one reason doctors tell you to soak the injured area in vinegar. Vinegar is also recommended to dissolve the spine (calcium carbonate dissolves in acid). Vinegar also helps prevent against injection. If you try to dig the spine out or pull it out, it can get infected. If you see red swelling around the injury which continues to enlarge two or three days after the injury, you have an infection and should see a doctor who will likely prescribe antibiotics.

Vána is also the name of a fictional character from J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium. Click here for that:
