Vancouver is a city in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1886, it is named after Captain George Vancouver, an English explorer. The city proper has 538,267 residents, and the Greater Vancouver area - with a regional population of 2,208,300 (2005 estimate) - is the largest metropolitan area in western Canada and the third largest in the country.

Vancouver is consistently rated as one of the three most livable cities in the world. It is internationally renowned for its beautiful scenery, including Stanley Park, one of the largest urban parks in North America. Vancouver was the host city of the 1986 World's Fair and will host the 2010 Winter Olympics. The city has earned the nickname "Hollywood North" as North America's second largest film production centre and the third-largest for US-based productions. In 2006, Vancouver was ranked the 56th most expensive city to live in among 144 major cities in the world and the second most expensive in Canada (after Toronto). (Read More...)
