Public domain photo by James E. Scarborough August 28, 2004 of a vampire watermelon. I bought the watermelon at the Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Farmers' market on August 24, 2004 at about 17:20 (GMT-4) and stored it until August 28, 2004 12:00 between 74 and 80 degrees Faharenheit (23-27 C). The "blood" on the outside felt like a thin film of sticky dirt and turned brownish red when wet on my hands from cutting the melon shortly after photographing it.
