Valsinni

Valsinni is a town and comune in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. Its most famous buildings which are part of Valsinni's heritage are the Isabella Morra Castle which wdates from the end of the 14th century, the Palazzo Melidoro, Chiesa Madre (mother church) of medieval origins and the Chiesa dell'Annunziata from the sixteen hundereds. Valsinni is also famous for Isabella Morra, writer and poet from the 15th century when Valsinni was known as Favale S. Cataldo.
The town boasts an ancient tradition of millers, whose symbol is the mill of ‘Palazzo Mauri’, which is still supplied with large stone wheels. The economy of the town is mostly based on agriculture and livestock breeding.
Major festival of Valsinni is on the 9th and 10th may when there is a religious procession for the patron saint S. Fabiano.
