Vallipuram

Vallipuram is an ancient capital of Sri Lanka. The place name Valli or Vali is a Ramayana name. Thus the Vishnu temple here celeberates the Ramayana connection to this date. The deity of the temple is called Vallipura Azhvar. Azhvar names are common in Vaishnavite tradition. The place was undeer the sea water as the soil structure was regosols.
Point Pedro is the nearest town. Vallipuram is a part of Thunnalai. The land on the West side has white clay which is used as namam. It is an indication of the sea advancing inland and wiping out all the mineral contents of the clay particles and leaving only the pure clay in the soil.
Vallipuram ( Sandy City ) Temple was a complex of Hindu-Buddhist temples on 'Angkor Wat' model and was a visiting place for Chinese and Indonesian vessels. Chandrabhanu, the Javanese Prince had used this place as a base for attacking Pollonaruwa before settling and creating his new found kingdom in Jaffna.
The Buddha statue found here at the Buddhist site was gifted to King of Thailand by the then British Governor. Another artefact thus found was a gold plate donated by King Vasabha.
The descendants of Arya Chakravarti married into Kalinga Magha family and created a dynasty of Singai-Aryans and ruled from Vallipuram and renamed it as Singai Nagar.
