[edit] History

When the Wheeler Avenue high school building was no longer adequate for the school's needs, a bond issue for $750,000 was passed in April 1928 for the construction of the present Central High School on Fletcher Avenue. The orange-and-cream brick and stone building was labelled “this community’s monument to knowledge” by proud Valley Stream citizens and opened in September of 1929 and was formerly dedicated on December 17. Soon after opening, the school was so crowded that they went on split sessions from 1935 until 1952 (when Memorial Junior High School opened). [1]
