Valkaria, Florida

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valkaria is located in Brevard County, south of Melbourne between Palm Bay and Sebastian along US Hwy 1 (part of the Melbourne-Titusville-Palm Bay, Florida metropolitan area).

The community name derives from Valkyrie, a warrior-maiden of Norse mythology.

A MISTRAM missile tracking system was built by the US Air Force here in the early 1960s. A sister complex was built on Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. The MISTRAM system was built by the Radio Guidance Operation of the General Electric Company in Syracuse, New York.

A largely rural community in the south end of the county near Grant, Valkaria includes older homes, newer upscale homes on acre-plus lots and the county owned Habitat Golf Course, a 6,836-yard, par-72 course set near the Valkaria Airport amidst the rolling hills, pine forests, and wetlands of the area.

Valkaria is also home to many private pilots and the Valkaria Airport serves many small general aviation aircraft. More information about Valkaria FL is available at www.valkaria.org website

A recent development in Valkaria is the move to municipal incorporation together with the neighboring town of Grant. This succeeded in a special election on July 24th, 2006, with 66% of residents voting to form the new municipality of Grant-Valkaria, Florida.
