Valdosta State University

Valdosta State University is a public university located in the city of Valdosta, Georgia in the United States, and is part of the University System of Georgia.


The university was founded in 1906 as South Georgia State Normal College, becoming Georgia State Women's college in 1922. In 1950, the college began admitting male students and changed its name to Valdosta State College. On July 1, 1993, the university took its current title when it became a Regional University in the University System of Georgia.

VSU is made up of five colleges, they are: Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Arts, and Nursing. There is also a Graduate School.

Valdosta State University has hosted the Governor's Honors Program for the last twenty-five years.

The campus covers 168 acres (680,000 m²), and the university has a student body of over 10,000 from 48 states and 50 countries.

It is conveniently located off of Interstate 75.

The current president is Ron Zaccari.

  • Enrollment for Fall semester 2006 was 10,888, which was an increase over Fall semester 2005.
  • New students totaled 2,778 in Fall of 2003, which was an 1.72 % increase from 2002.
  • The average age of undergraduates is 23, and graduate students average 36 years of age.
  • The student body is a diverse group. Females represent the majority of the student body at sixty-three percent. Twenty-five percent of the students are self-declared minorities.
  • Georgians comprise ninety-one percent of the total enrollment.
  • Students come from 154 of the 159 counties in the state, 45 states, and many countries.
  • In FY 2004, over $61 million in student financial aid was distributed.

  • Valdosta State University Blazers football team won the 2004 NCAA Division II national championship with a 36-31 win over Pittsburg State University.
  • Valdosta State University's Men's Tennis team won the 2006 NCAA Division II national championship with a 5-2 win over Lynn University.
  • Valdosta State's baseball team won the 1979 NCAA Division II national championship.
