Vachana
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vachanas(Kannada: ವಚನಗಳು) are a body of work, and a form of writing, in Kannada. They are usually recognised as part of a movement called the vachana or the Veerashaiva movement of the 12th century C.E., which took place in present day northern Karnataka, India. One of the leading figures of the movement was Basavanna. This body of work has come to be treated in the 20th century as poetic literature. Among other reasons, the popularity of the vachanas is based on its colonial/20th century reading as a literature expressing a subaltern revolt against Hindu caste-system. As scholars are increasingly of the opinion in the recent times, such readings are based on the colonial interpretations of the Indian tradition and there is a need to revive it urgently.
