The UT Cougars are one of the original four British Collegiate American Football League (BCAFL) teams which began play in the 1985-86 season (along with Hull, Newcastle and the now-defunct Manchester). The Cougars were one of the more successful teams in the early BCAFL, winning two straight college bowls in 1990 & 1991. UT had struggled since the early 1990s compiling a 35-60-8 record in 13 seasons with only one playoff appearance leading up to the 2005-06 season. In 2006, UT won the Northern Conference for the third time in team history (and for the first time since 1991) before falling to Southampton 79-8 in College Bowl XX.
From 1985-2000, the team was known as the Teesside Demons.
