[edit] Location
The Republic of Ustio is located to the East of Osea and Southeast of Belka. After its independence, it had around three times the land it has now, but by the time of The Belkan War, most of the land had gone to Recta, Gebet, and Ratio. It is a small nation, about the size of Austria, and less than half the size of Belka at its height, but comparable to it, more or less, after its fall.
It is a small nation. It is a landlocked country not bordering any major bodies of water. It is bordered by Belka, Sapin, Ratio, Recta, and after The Belkan War, by Osea.
[edit] Climate
Ustio has a mountain belt that runs through the country. This has created alpine and tundra conditions in the south, where the mountain range is. In the north, around B7R, the climate seems more arid, forming the craggy canyons that we see. The capital, Directus, is fairly temperate.
[edit] Culture
Ustian culture, given the limited information from the game, seems to be influenced by Spain in the real world, although not as much as the allied nation of Sapin. Several names (like Valais) of places seem to have a Spanish influence to it. Other names, such as Solis Ortus and Directus, have Latin origns.
[edit] Notable places
- Area B7R - Known to the Belkan military as 'Air Priority One', but known to the pilots who fought in it simply as the Round Table, this circle of seemingly unremarkable canyons and crags became the fiercest battle site on the eastern front. Located at the border of the two countries, it is a vital air corridor for both Belka and Ustio and also an area of valuable natural resources, allowing them access to each others heart land. Massive dogfights erupted here, and those who came out on top were known as the Knights of the Round Table; feared and respected by both their enemies and their allies.
- Directus - The capital of the Republic of Ustio. During the Belkan war, the capital is taken in the first week of hostilities, due to Belka's combined land-air assault. Later on, the capital is liberated with the help of Galm team. The city is similar to the city of Bern in Switzerland
- Solis Ortus - A town to the southwest of Directus, Solis Ortus was liberated by the Allied forces to create a stepping stone to the Ustian capital, Directus.
- Valais Air Base - The last stronghold of the Ustian armed forces after the quick fall of their capital to the Belkans. High in the mountains, it seems untounchable by ground forces, but is vulnerable to air raids. It is here the Ustians deploy their new makeshift airforce which includes a large contingent of mercenaires, to make up for the vast losses taken by regular airforce during Belka's initial attack. After a failed air raid, the Mercenary Airforce slowly gain momentum on their counter-offensive. The base suffered significant damage during a XB-0 Hresvelgr air raid, but remains operational.
[edit] History
[edit] Belkan Federation Member State
The known history of Ustio starts in the 80's. Ustio was a member of the Belkan Federation, which was led by the two main Belkan states, South Belka and North Belka. Ustio was rich in natural resources, oil, steel, and iron to name a few, which were used by Belka to spur on their industrial boom of the early and mid 80's. Ustians, however, did not see much of the profit of the mining and oil drilling, since those things were regulated by the Belkan Federals in Sudentor. There was uneasiness between the two, and it was starting to show.
[edit] The Belkan Law Review and Ustian Independence
The Belkans were concerned that the tensions in the Belkan Federation might destroy the economy. So in 1988, the Belkan Federation enacted The Federal Law Review, a way for non-Belkan Federation states to voice their opinion on and put forth new laws. In the eyes of the Belkan federalists, who truly just wanted the federation to work right, this was a way to streamline the Federation and solve any issues that may have occurred.
All that changed when a Federation state put forward the motion to secede. Unbelievely, it got a majority and the cecession was ratified. Following in its foot steps, Ustio also put forward the motion to secede, and again it was ratified. Ustio used most of its resources on domestic affairs and the rest was exported to Osea. Some have said that Osea was behind the cecession, but there is no evidence to support such a claim. Without the resources that were Belka's lifeline, the Federation's economy collapsed, causing inflation and unemployment rates to skyrocket. By contrast Ustio's economy was in good shape, it built up its military for a defensive role. The nation also realized the importance of early warning radar, and purchased at least one AWACS plane.
[edit] The Belkan War
As the years passed, Belka began to rebuild its economy. A fascist regime had taken control of the Federation, and it was scraping every available resource together to form the ultimate fighting force. This was an everything or nothing affair; the propaganda and facade of Belka was paper thin as they knew the country was dying, but they were determined to fight one last war to the bitter end.
Meanwhile, the Ustians were looking on wearily. they could see that Belka was up to something, but trusted their safety in Osea's hands, if they could react in time, the Belkans would be stopped in their tracks. As a precaution, though, bases like Valais AFB were built to protect defendable areas of Ustio.
Then, in March 1995, a massive deposit of natural resources was found under the Ustian mountain range. Belka, realizing that now was the time to strike, declared the Belkan Federal Law Review unconstitutional, and advanced upon the borders of Ustio, Sapin, and Osea.
In the first waves, the Belkan Air Force destroyed and estimated 90% of the Ustian airforce. Unable to provide aerial support to their troops, the Ustian military withdrew their remaining forces to the mountain range. It was there that the Ustians made the unprecedented decision to supplement the vast losses taken by their airforce with Mercenary pilots. Examples of this are the Galm Squadren (6th Air Division / 66th Air Force Unit) and the Crow Squadren (6th Air Division / 4th Air Force Unit) both of which are comprised entirely of mercenaries.
This force was able to turn the tide on the eastern front, and they inched their way north, liberating all of Ustio, and pressing into South Belka. At this point, the Ustio Air Force cooperated with forces from Osea, Yuktobania and Sapin to form the Allied Forces. Belka's military began to retreat to the "Holy" land of North Belka, and when defeat became certain, they detonated seven nuclear bombs in the passage to North Belka, sealing the passage to the north forever.
During the duration of the war, Ustian pilots often took on daring assignments, such as the attack on the Belkan Superlaser "Excalibur" which was headed by Galm and Crow flights, as well as many dogfights in the Round Table. Despite the involvement of the Ustio airforce, the Belkan war is generally remembered for the roles played by Osea and Yuktobania. Few remember that it was the resources in and around Ustio that made Belka declare war in the first place.
[edit] The "A World With No Boundaries" Crisis
In the final days of the war, when the fighting in southern Belka was reaching its climax, soldiers from both sides defected and joined the newly formed group "A World With No Boundaries" whose leadership included many of Belka's surviving Aces. Their goal was to eliminate all borders and form a global state, by any and all means necessary.
The group got a hold of the abandoned experimental Belkan superbomber, the XB-0 Hresvelgr, and made it their staging area for attacks. The group laid low, attracting members from Osea and Sapin to their cause even before the Belkan War oficially ended. After the war ended however, A World With No Boundaries put its plan into motion.
On Christmas day, they sent the Hresvelgr on a bombing mission to attack Lumen, the city in which a peace treaty was being signed between Osea and Belka. The Hresvelgr then moved onto Valais Air Base in Ustio, but was shot down by Galm flight. The duo of Sapin defectors (The Espada Squadron) guarding the behemoth were also downed with it. The group then attempted to launch the recently completed V2 nuclear missile from a launch facility located at the Avalon Dam in Mund Valley in the north of Belka, but Galm 1 managed to damage the launch control mechanism before the launch was completed. Finally, after Cipher shot down the last remaining ace of the organization, his old wingman, Pixy, the group was disbanded.
[edit] After The Belkan War
Not much is known about Ustio's fate after the Belkan War, but according to the map during briefing in Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, Ustio still exists in 2010. However, it appears to have a minimal role in international affairs.
