[edit] UCB vs Cal
Since this is a user box (and should probably be migriated to userspace at some point), I would argue that the USERS who are using it should have the say in it. Standardization is great for the actual project, but for a userbox it seems like the users should decide, since it's going on their user page.
In that regards, as a user of the template, I'd prefer Cal. --Falcorian (talk) 16:28, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Good call, I prefer Cal too for the two simple reasons: 1. It's recognized, 2. It's what the campus uses. But I have no problems userfying this for myself if I'm not in the majority. ~ trialsanderrors 18:06, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- I think that UCB is better. --evrik 18:44, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
There's a simple solution to this: I set two variables: 1. The text in the logobox, 2. the "affiliation" text. To get Cal, set it to {{user cal|Cal}}. To get UCB, set it to {{user cal|UCB}}. To set the affiliation, set for instance to {{user cal|Cal|attended}} or {{user cal|UCB|is a student at}} . I'm going to alert the other editors which use this userbox. ~ trialsanderrors 21:20, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, this method is not compatible with the {{Babel}} template, which will have to be subst'd in order for {{user cal}} to work. --Ixfd64 02:07, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well the Babelbox seems to be for languages, not for college affiliations? ~ trialsanderrors 02:11, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- The template will work with Babel as long as there is no input argument. For example, {{Babel|cal}} will work, but {{Babel|cal|Cal}} will not. When an input argument is used, Babel will think that you're trying to add another userbox. --Ixfd64 03:36, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- That wasn't really my question, but ok. So as long as we have defaults we're in the clear then? ~ trialsanderrors 03:49, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

I personally prefer Cal as well; is it possible to (for the sake of syntax or whatever) define two different userboxes, UCB AND Cal, and let people use whichever one. Or does that create problems? - Antares784
[edit] German Userbox Solution
In partial accordance with the German Userbox Solution, I've added this template to my userspace, at User:Argyriou/Userboxen/cal. Argyriou 23:01, 17 July 2006 (UTC) UCB '91 Civil Engineering
