Percentage of whites in the United States population by county as of the 2000 census; the darker red, the higher percentage of European Americans in that county's population. Vast stretches of the northern half of the United States are nearly 100% white, punctuated by Indian reservations and urban counties such as Cook County (Chicago). The southern United States has many more rural counties with substantial populations of Hispanics and American Indians (in the Southwest) and blacks (in the South). (Note: This should not be confused with "population density", which defines the number of persons per square mile; highly-white counties in states such as North Dakota typically have a very low population density.)
