Urla (district)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Urla is a district of İzmir Province of Turkey.
It is situated on the road to Çeşme from İzmir and holds typically Aegean characteristics. It lies 38 km. west of İzmir and used to be an important cultural centre as indicated by the discovered remains that date as far back as the Hitties. It was originally the site of the Ionian city of Clazomenae, with probably the most ancient regularly used port in the world. Pieces of art and sculpture found during excavations are now exhibited in the Louvre, Athens National Museum and İzmir Archaeology Museum.
Urla boasts of two important men of letters among his sons: It is the birthplace of the Greek poet Giorgos Seferis and the Turkish novelist Necati Cumalı (born in Florina and re-settled in the framework of the 1923 Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations) grew up in Urla.
First olive oil production in the world, dating back to Ionians. The traces show first over-sea olive oil export.
