Hiromichi Tanaka, producer of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Final Fantasy XI, has announced that Square Enix has begun work on a new MMORPG. He added that Square Enix is hoping to make the game a worldwide title. At this stage of development, details are guarded closely, although Tanaka has revealed that the title is being developed for both the Sony PlayStation 3 video game console and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Although there are no plans at this point to release it for the Xbox 360 console, Tanaka did not rule out the possibility that the company might develop for the platform at some point in the future.[1]

On July 14th, 2006, an erroneous report was leaked to Nikkei Net claiming that Square Enix was developing a sequel to Final Fantasy XI for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows Vista.[2]. These reports were quickly denied by Square Enix, who issued a press release explaining that the project under development was "a completely new MMORPG."[3]
