Unterseeboot 5

Unterseeboot 5 refers to five submarines of the German Navy. U 5 (Type U5), UB 5 (Type UB I), and UC 5 (Type UC I) all served in World War I, while U5 (Type IIA) served in World War II and U5 (type 205) in the cold war.

[edit] U 5 (Type U 5)

The first Unterseeboot 5 (U5) was commissioned July 2, 1910 in Krupp Germaniawerft, Kiel, Germany. She served in World War I under the command of Johannes Lemmer, with no recorded sinkings of enemy ships on two patrols. She was destroyed in an accident off of the Belgian coast December 18, 1914, with all hands lost.

The second Unterseeboot 5 (UB 5) was commissioned November 22, 1915. She served in World War I under the command of Wilhelm Smiths. UB-5 recorded 5 ships sunk for a total of 996 tons on 24 patrols in 1915 & 1916. She was transferred to a training flotilla on September 21, 1916, and stricken February 19, 1919 at Dräger, Lübeck.

The third Unterseeboot 5 (UC5) was commissioned June 19, 1915, at Hamburg. She served in World War I under the command of Herbert Pustkuchen (June 1915-December 1915) and Ulrich Mohrbutter (December 1915-April 1916). UC-5 had an impressive career, with 29 ships sunk for a total of 36,288 tons on 29 patrols. She ran aground while on patrol April 27, 1916.

The fourth Unterseeboot 5 (U5) was commissioned August 31, 1935, under Oberleutenant zur See Rolf Dau. U-5 served mostly as a training boat from 1935 to 1940, but did see two wartime patrols in 1940. She was transferred to the 21 Unterseebootsflottille (Unterseebootsschulflottille) on July 1, 1940. U-5 sank March 19, 1943 in a diving accident west of Pillau. 16 of the 37-man crew survived.

The fifth Unterseeboot 5 (U5) was commissioned July 4, 1963. It got the NATO pennant number S184. It was decommissioned August 1, 1974 and then scrapped.
