Unterseeboot 217

U-217 was a German World War II Type VIID submarine commissioned on 31 January 1942; it served with the 9.Unterseebootflottille (9th U-Boat Flotilla) from 1 August 1942 to 5 June 1943. U-217 completed 3 patrols and sunk 3 ships totalling 10,651 Gross Registered Tonnage. U-217 was sunk on 5 June 1943 in the mid-Atlantic with all hands on deck, by depth charges dropped by Grumman TBF Avengers from the escort carrier USS Bogue.
