From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unterseeboot 181 (U-181) was a Type IX U-boat, best known for her two patrols in 1942–43 under the command of Wolfgang Lüth. U-181 operated very successfully in the Indian ocean as well as South African waters. During these two patrols under Lüth's command she sank almost 82,000 tons of Allied shipping. During his last patrol on U-181 Lüth was the first U-boat captain to receive the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds.
