Unreal Championship, or "UC" is a first-person shooter video game co-developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes. It was published by Infogrames and released on November 12, 2002 for the Xbox. Unreal Championship is essentially a console version game of the IBM PC compatible-based Unreal Tournament series, developed specifically to take advantage of Xbox Live, Microsoft's online gaming service. During development Epic Games decided to port this game to the PC as Unreal Tournament 2003 (or UT2003), which actually got released before Unreal Championship. In 2003 Unreal Championship was added to Microsoft's "Platinum Hits" line of Xbox games. It was followed in 2005 by Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict also for Xbox.

Because of the following advertisement many fans have compared UC to Halo:

"Unreal Championship is the highest-profile game in Microsoft's Xbox lineup, and it's easy to see why. Take the sci-fi first-person shooter Game of the Year winner Halo, then crank up the graphics knob so far that it breaks off in your hand. Replace the tactical, cool-as-ice-water pace of Halo with an electrified mix of nitroglycerin and Mountain Dew. What you get is Unreal Championship, a high-energy fragfest bursting with absurd "attitude" and "edginess," wrapped up in the best-looking and slickest-playing graphics engine ever to grace a television set. There's no better game (with the exception of the rumored Halo Online) to usher in the online game joy of Xbox Live"

Due to the fact that many fans were expecting an advanced form of Halo many people were dissapointed. For most gamers Halo is the way to go and the fact that every FPS game for XBOX gets compared to Halo is a testament to how popular the game is.

Many people believe that UC could never have been quite as successful as Halo due to the fact that Halo came at a time when Xbox was still new, the graphics, sound, options, concepts, and gameplay were all new. UC on the other hand had a standard to follow, and if the fans were going to be satisfied, surpass. This couldnt be because of the fact that Halo had no other console FPS to live up too besides maybe Perfect Dark and Goldeneye which both were way behind Halo technologically.

Unreal Championship gameplay

This list shows the differences and changes made between the PC and console version:

Unreal Championship

  • Unreal Championship begins and ends with different full-motion videos to UT2003.
  • Player must defeat his/her team in order to be the championship winner.
  • Characters from different species have slightly different statistics (jumping height, speed, health, etc.)
  • Characters in the game have different names to those in UT2003.
  • Force feedback support.
  • Some visual features have been removed or scaled back in Unreal Championship, such as certain transparent surfaces.
  • Reduced sound quality.
  • No Redeemer
  • Unreal Championship is influenced with a "Mortal Kombat" esque. The music, announcer, blood graphics and particular powers that the characters have all reflect this.

Unreal Tournament 2003

  • Additional characters.
  • Wider range of playable characters.
  • Scalable graphics, supporting much higher visual quality than Unreal Championship.
  • Player must defeat Malcolm in order to be the winner of the tournament.
  • Other gun models (not all).

[edit] Changes from Unreal Tournament

Unreal Championship and Unreal Tournament 2003 added a number of features to the gameplay of their predecessor, such as:

  • An Adrenaline Meter, which the player can fill by picking up pill-shaped adrenaline powerups or achieving objectives.
  • Unreal Engine 2.0, allowing for larger maps, more details physics and a better looking graphics.
  • Class selection of different rosters and species.
  • Unique abilities for each character.

[edit] Adrenaline

Adrenaline allows the player to temporarily augment their own abilities. To be used, adrenaline meter must have been filled by achieving objectives (such as killing enemies or capturing the enemy flag) or collecting adrenaline powerups. There are four abilities the player can select from:

Berserk: increases the players speed, damage and defense.

Invisibility: turns the player partially invisible. This is not full invisibility, but only allows the players skin to be transparent so others can't see them easily.

Heal: gradually increases the players health up to its limit. Once health is at 100%, it increases the player's shield armour. This can only happen if there is enough adrenaline left.

Speed: gives the player the ability to move a lot faster. Only provides increased movement if there is enough adrenaline left.
