[edit] Pictures

I've been using pictures from the internet, I would bother scanning them but my comics (also large collection) are at my parents house. Please do fill in, add, modify the new entries Ive submitted under DC Comics Discussion.-User:Marvelvsdc

[edit] Ned Kelly pictures

Hi - I think the inclusion of the pictures is great but wanted to check that they really were in the public domain. While the film is over a century old, the digitised images of the stills are very much more recent and I understand that the age of the pictures may not necessarily then be taken as 100 years but from the time of the digitisation. Perhaps we need to apply to whoever created those images to confirm they are prepared to release them and under what circumstances. Regards--AYArktos 22:16, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi, its good to see us checking up on each other. Well ScreenSound Australia is the government organisation who restores the film. They have currently restored 9 minutes of the film, and that 9 minutes is indeed public domain, so I would assume any screenshot from it would also be public domain. However, just to be safe even if it is copyrighted I will change the tags to, film-screenshot because getting screenshots of films isnt illegal under US Fair use anyway. - UnlimitedAccess 03:22, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
Also since Wiki is on US servers, we abide by US copyright law. "For films first published outside the US before 1923, almost all are in the US public domain. In addition to the provisos listed above for US pre-1923 films, there is another exception for foreign published films between 1909 and 1923 that were first published without a copyright notice" [1]. So the Ned Kelly film is definetly public domain. - UnlimitedAccess 03:49, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
thanks - I am more than happy with that answer - Gvernment is not public domain, in fact more likely than not to assert copyright, but the 2nd point overrides so all is well ... Regards--AYArktos 08:16, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Aristotle

Hi! I'm interested to know why Aristotle was a hero of yours while growing up? --Sp82 19:10, 30 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi, well as a boy nothing excited me more than the concept of learning as much about the world as possible. I adored the idea that Artistotle was one of the few figureheads throughout history that studied every field of known science at the time and a million other things, like language, poetry, education.. he was a major influence on me growing up. Not only that but as a child I adored the "What If's" of the universe (Like im sure we all did), and learning at the age of 14-15 that they had discovered an old workbook Artistotle owned, and in it contained Aristotles maths working out, and in showed he had developed a form of calculus but it had been lost for two thousands years until then. A major reason why engineering and other fields in the industrial revolution took off was because they could use calculus, so if Artistole had managed to get his concept of calculus known, and we had known it throughout our entire history, who knows, we could of landed on the moon 200 years ago. As a boy that really interested me. Plus at the time their was speculation that the book contained totally new concepts, and some mathematicians even theorised new fields of mathematics could even be born from the material. I loved the idea that even to this day a guy two and half thousand years ago thought of stuff we hadnt even discovered... :)UnlimitedAccess 05:47, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh and nearing the end of High School I got really interested in Logic, so naturally came across Aristotelian logic, and devloped quite an appreciation for what it was... but I guess thats past childhood..... Like him, I am interested in so mnay fields of science, and as I study each one, his name keeps popping up, and I have come to understand he has made major contributions to almost all sciences.... few people in history can claim the same. -UnlimitedAccess 05:52, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I see! I was curious because I have been studying the ancient Greeks from a cosmological angle, and thus Aristotle was only one of many great thinkers! But yes, I have to agree – his work survived through the Dark and into the Middle Ages and outlived Plato’s work.
For me, Anaximander (610 – 547 BC) brings some inspiration because he realised that everything was made from the same indestructible and unobservable building block, and everything can be broken down back into it. Also, the fact that he realised that the Earth could float because it has no preferred direction in which to fall – and that previous universes had been formed and destroyed was genius!
Other than that, Aristarchus who proposed the heliocentric model.
It’s amazing to think that it took until the 11th Century AD for Western cosmological understanding to be on par with the ancient Greeks again! --Sp82 12:34, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding rename

On Wikipedia, we generally use the name that is used in the (or one of the) English-language releases. And yes, EN is skewed towards U.S. and U.K. culture. WhisperToMe

For better or for worse..?.. sigh, it appears to me, thats one of the things we should also try to weed out. Its more benefitial as an encyclopedia to search for Wicked City a name generated by the US marketing company, which then forwards the user to the real name.
Oh, and before you say it, no, I dont think its futile to attempt to remove cultural bias from wiki, even at this point down the track. And im neither from the US/UK, :P, buts thats just semantics.. :) - UnlimitedAccess 20:46, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Skeptics and atheists are completely different, You sound like an agnostic to me. Atheists deny God based on "faith" (or sheer wickedness) despite abundant evidence to the contrary. Sam Spade 20:19, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
The person who thinks he hasn't seen proof of God is you, or another agnostic. Most of us have achieved that "great scientific discovery". As far as all this "proof of existence" bit... I exist. You exist. Even if I was an Epiphenomenalist, you would still exist. Why? Because you are doing things, because I experience you, because someone can imagine you. You are something, even if we are all part of a whole. All of these imagined animals and other foolishness have nothing to do w God's existence. They exist because you imagine them. You exist because God wills it. I am proof of God, and so is everything else, including you. Sam Spade 21:42, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Absolute narcissism

Seriously, I though I was vain until you told me about these wikipedia user pages - Now I have a whole new standard to live up to. I'll probably end up making my own page sometime in the next few weeks, probably while i'm on holiday in the tropics. By the way, great Jerilderie picture.

Ahh.. a La Trobe University IP... could it be Sam... :) Well good to see you, I hope you start writing for Wikipedia. Wiki user pages for the most are just Blogs... but they allow other wiki editors to see what bias other editors have, thats sometimes really quite important. It goes the other way though, theoretically we could have prejudice against us, but I honestly think the good outways the bad. - UnlimitedAccess 23:23, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Just popped by to say 'hallo.' I'm new to Wikipedia and find it amazing and addictive. I'm reading around, trying to get a feel of what is going on - and who - and of the WikiCommunity (I'm not sure if exactly that link exists but I'm too tired to check it out.)The 'community' has a real feel to it, made up of very different groupings in so many places. Hope it is OK dropping by - I came across you through Sam Spade Good wishes - keep trawling. Jeffrey Newman 01:28, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey Shane, how you knew that is still a mystery to me but it's ok if its get deleted. I uploaded it thinking I would need it for the article (but as I didn't know, wiki builds its own thumbnails). [edit] Thanks

Thanks for putting up the logo of the A.Skeptics. If I was cleverer at this Wiki-language I would have done it. I intend to get back to the A.S page and keep adding things that skeptics are sceptical about...

PS. Love the photo of Jerilderie!

Don't get me wrong about Wiki-Language. It's just that I only ever mastered BASIC and a bit of Pascal. That was bad enough. Yep, been a member of the Skeptics for about 22 years! [edit] wow... thanks ... good job for the WC3 characters images

have been looking for suitable pics for some of the WC3 heroes.... luckily you found them... thanks and a job very well done =)...

if you could find other images of related characters, do feel free to add them. thanks a lot.

Debroglie 08:06, 29 August 2005 (UTC) =)

Hi, this is me again (debroglie)... i just want to compliment you on the very fine job on List of Warcraft characters and Organizations in the Warcraft Universe.... you have contributed far more than what i ever did in the Warcraft articles =)

However, some of the mini-articles like Alleria and the clans (like the Black Tooth Grin/Bonechewer clan), in my opinion, should be left in the big article instead of starting a new one. Reason is that some of us have written these articles before and admin merged them into the big article (giving the reason that it is fancruft and not worthy of an article)... (you can check out the history of Alleria Windrunner to see it)... Any opinions or suggestions on what we should do?

Debroglie 14:42, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. Not that i am against creating new articles for Alleria and the rest, but the merge decision was made by an admin... =(.

Anyway, aside from Derktar, you are one of the active people managing the Warcraft articles... and a fine job at that (the images are a great source)... You deserve a pat on the back! you have contributed a lot toward the improvement of the wc3 articles... and i can see a lot of work has been put into it (honest!... i have never seen the Warcraft Races page looking better... it used to be bland without any images =)... really really fine job you've done. thanks a lot.

=) Debroglie 15:03, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] great job! =)

my salute to you... great work on the WC Locations page... you're the man!

[edit] AusNs

calling the AusNs page "vanity page" is wrong, and i dont know why you would think that or want to take it down, Ausns is Australias largest natural selection community, with some 2500 members from all over Australia, new zealand, indonesia, and even some tazmanians, you can check the site out yourself at www.ausns.com

sif delete

I sympathise, but the article itself demonstrates their is nothing of importance about the organization. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, the group must be notable. Local bands, local churches, local schools, local Lan parties, local guilds are are non notable even if they have 10,000 members. The AusNS page could never be fully fleshed out to a full article and would always remain a stub (and when I found it was just a place for random graffiti by members). If you improve the article and demonstrate how including the page is encyclopedic then I will change my vote, and i'm sure the others may too. But as an aside, I barely think that the mod "Natural Selection" is notable, let alone the community that has based itself around it. - UnlimitedAccess 22:19, 4 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright

Hi Access!

I was just wondering exactly how im supposed to show the copyright status of this drawing. Your message left me a little confused. I think that it was drawn by Metzen (who works for Blizzard) or someone but im not sure. I'm currently finding that out. Can you give me a link to another image that is properly copyrighted? Thanks.

P.S. Warcraft rules.

P.S.S. I have another image here and im not sure if it's properly copyrighted.

[edit] Thanks!

Thanks for the help Access! I think that I've fixed up those pages but I couldn't have done it without you! Thanks man! And thanks for the warm welcome to Wikipedia! [edit] Category:Warcraft

It appears that all of the character articles for Warcraft have spilled over into the main Warcraft category. Although I don't know the cause, I suspect it may be related to the new Warcraft templates, could you please go through them and give them a look-through, I already have and I couldn't find anything wrong but I don't know what else could be causing it. [edit] Image Tagging Image:Alterac-warcraft2-with-orc-symbol.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Alterac-warcraft2-with-orc-symbol.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by going to "Your contributions" from your user page and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Re: Image Tagging Image:Alleria-warcraft2-exp-heros-image.jpg and Image:Alterac-warcraft2-with-orc-symbol.jpg

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, it isn't the tag that is in question, but rather that you should state that fact when uploading them, as follows:

  • Source: from the video game manual to the Blizzard Entertinments video game Warcraft 2, image from instruction manual as provided on the video game cd.

You should also add any copyright information regarding the images contained within the manual. Was there any?

Thanks for getting back to me with the source by the way. Steve block talk 21:17, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image tagging

[edit] Facade

If you are going to change a page in such a fundamental way it I think it would be better if you were to put a question on the talk page for at least 24 hours, but preferably longer, before making the change. It is possible that other people have a different take on the issue or that there are better ways of accomplishing the same thing. Even if there are not you are less likely to annoy people who have been editing a page and have a vested interest in it. --Philip Baird Shearer 20:07, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for responding on my talk page. I am sorry if my posting on your talk page seems harsh, it was not my intention to come over as such. The three points I would have mentioned if you had raised the subject on the talk Facade talk page:

  • I am not sure it is necessary to create lots of little stub articles instead of keeping one article. ... But assuming that the majority of editors of the page think it a good idea:
    • What is the context of the majority of Wikipedia links to facade? In this case most are of building origin, so perhapses the best thing to do is to create a facade (disambiguation) leaving the main topic at facade.
    • But if the links were spread evenly over a number of meanings then which is the largest part of the article? Then move the article to Facade (Architecture) to preserve the history of the major contribution. Edit the resulting Facade redirect with the new disambiguation page. And then someone has to go through the links and fix them ... --Philip Baird Shearer 15:13, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1050 games I should play?!

I notice you have User:UnlimitedAccess/Games#1050 Games You Should Play. How many of these have you actually found time to play? Of the ones you haven't played, on what basis are you recommending them? SeahenNeonMerlin 19:34, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Hiya, I have played all of them up besides myabe a handful posted by a friend of mine. The list isnt complete many of the titles are quite bad, I intend to expand the list to about 5000 then edit back to a refined 1001. I still havent exploded the games just represented by a series. For example "Final Fantasy" and "Ultima", I would only list the ones that were notable. Before you ask it's an activity I am doing to generate all the games/developers/publications/companys that are "important" so I can contribute on those articles. Your welcome to append some titles if their missing, but dont feel bad if they eventually get edited down, I imagine more than a quarter of the titles their will be removed eventually. - UnlimitedAccess 21:29, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arnott's Biscuits Holdings

Since you requested (and got!) a restoration on this article, could you take it upon yourself to bring it up to standard? It doesn't have any sources at all. - brenneman {L} 05:47, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Power-Glove-image-layed-out.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Power-Glove-image-layed-out.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Sherool (talk) 09:37, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
