The University of the South Pacific (USP) is a public university with a number of locations spread throughout a dozen countries in Oceania. It is an international centre for teaching and research on Pacific culture and environment. USP's academic programmes are recognised worldwide, attracting students and staff from throughout the Pacific Region and internationally.
USP is owned by the governments of 12 Pacific Island countries: the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The university runs campuses in all 12 countries, as well as a Law school in Vanuatu and an Agricultural school in Samoa. The largest and oldest campus at Laucala, Fiji was established in 1968 on the site of a former airforce base. In 2005, plans were announced to build a $6 million campus in the Marshall Islands, USP's first campus in the northern Pacific.
USP offers undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes including teaching, tourism, journalism, agriculture, science and environmental management, technology, computing and information systems, banking and finance, public administration and management, counselling and social services and others.
[edit] Financing
On 13 December 2005, USP Vice-Chancellor Anthony Tarr and Australian diplomat Stephanie Copus-Campbell signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under which Australia agreed to provide the USP with a total of A$9.9 million over the following three years. This is in addition to the A$2.5 million that Australia contributes annually for scholarships.
